Do you know the health benefits of dancing? Dancing integrates several brain functions at once, elevating our mood by raising our endorphin levels. This is what allows us to heal stress and depression - two of our immune system's biggest enemies! It helps us establish our self-confidence and self-discipline. Some studies show evidence that dancing shakes off Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Other benefits are of the heart, cardiovascular system and increase in lung capacity. Dancing is tremendously beneficial in keeping us young. It improves the harmony between our mind and body, giving us a sense of well-being. So the next time you dance, “dance like nobody is watching”!

Vrksa’ means ‘tree.’ The Tree Pose brings balance to our mind, body and spirit, improving self-confidence and mind/body awareness. This asana is a great way to improve posture, stretch the inner thighs, groin and shoulders and strengthen the thighs, calves, ankles and spine. It can also be beneficial in relieving sciatica and in reducing flat feet.
  1. First, stand in mountain pose or Tadasana and ground all parts of the foot with the shoulder blades pressed together.
  2. Bring the right foot to the left ankle or upper left thigh. Press the thigh back into the foot to help provide stability. Keep in mind that the foot should never rest off the knee of the standing leg.
  3. Set your focus or drishti, on a fixed point in front of you. Keep your eyes glued to this unmoving point.
  4. While balancing on the left foot, keep the arms straight and raise them both together above the head and hold the palms together, inhaling steadily as you do so.
  5. Make sure not to sink your weight into the standing hip; think about rooting down from your base (standing foot) and lifting up, sending a long line of energy from the solid base out through your fingertips.

Tip of the Month - January 2016

Letting go of the past is one of the hardest lessons in life. There are things that we never want to let go of, people we never want to leave behind. But by holding onto something or someone, we’re less open to giving and receiving. Whatever happened in the past, it prepared us for 'the now', and ‘the now’ is full of opportunities.
By letting go - we welcome New Beginnings and New Possibilities. So pick up your paintbrush, take your instrument, write a song or simply put your feelings down on paper. It's the start to a new year, "release the old and embrace the new"!!!
